Nicole Reeve, co-host of the Outdoor Channel’s “Driven with Pat and Nicole,” is a lifelong hunter and outdoor enthusiast. In this interview, we had the pleasure of talking with her about her family, her filming and her plans for the future.
WON: What is your favorite memory from last year’s filming/hunting season?
Nicole: Our nine-year-old son, Carson, shot his first deer on my parent’s farm in Southern Illinois this year. Having my entire family there, sharing such a special time together, topped any hunt that Pat and I did this year! It will always hold a special place in my heart. Seeing his excitement and his eyes light up was awesome! Having my dad there to help blood trail the buck sure brought some old memories back to life!
WON: What hunting trip are you most looking forward to in 2013?
Nicole: We have so many great trips planned for this year, I don’t know which one to choose! I am going on my first Brown Bear hunt this spring. We will be hunting on the snow-pack, on snow mobiles. I’m pretty excited about this hunt because this is an animal I’ve always wanted to go after! We are also doing a mountain goat and caribou hunt. This is another trip we have been looking forward to, as it’s a first for us! Last but not least, I gave Pat a Big Horn Sheep hunt for a wedding present last year. We are excited to go on this trip together! I’m not hunting, but this is a specie that he has always held dear to his heart. It will almost be like a second honeymoon for us! Then, of course, lots of deer hunts are planned this year that we can’t wait for! When does fall start again?! I’m ready!
WON: What’s your favorite female-specific hunting product?
Nicole: That’s a tough question to answer, since there are so many helpful products geared toward the ladies! If I would have to choose, it would be my Scent Blocker SOLA warm- and cold- weather, scent-elimination gear that is built especially for women. I remember growing up and having to wear my brother’s hand-me-down camouflage; the pants would hang down to my knees, and the jackets were so huge that I could barely move! Another product I love is my Mathews’ Jewel! It is the perfect bow for me! I feel so much more confident afield with my equipment because it is made to fit me!
WON: How do you feel you influence ladies, especially young ladies, in the industry?
Nicole: One of my favorite times of the year is the spring time, when we get to travel to so many trade shows and meet so many different people that all love the same sport we do! Of course, my favorite at these shows are the kids! To see the faces of young kids that come up and show us pictures of animals they have harvested or just pictures of them going out hunting with their parents, grandparents etc. makes me realize why we work so hard to do what we do. This past year we had a married couple come by the booth who were both in their 70s. The wife had never stepped into the woods with her husband until last fall. She said that after watching our television show and seeing how much Pat and I enjoy the outdoors together, she finally decided to go out with her husband after all these years. She shot her first deer that year and now she’s hooked! No matter what age, it’s never too late to start enjoying the sport of hunting and the passion for the outdoors!
WON: Congratulations on your awards from the Golden Moose Award’s this year! Can you talk to me a little bit about the lion hunt you filmed during the episode that won Best Big Game?
Nicole: At first, when I told Pat I wanted to do a lion hunt, he thought I was crazy! But, he agreed to follow me on my pursuit, because he knew that it was truly something I wanted to do!
We started out the morning by scouting waterholes in the area, and looking for fresh tracks. We finally found a track that the game trackers thought was worth going after. After three hours, we spotted my lion lying in the shade underneath the trees. We stalked into 25 yards and I took my shot. If there was ever a time to make a good shot, it was definitely then! He only ran 30 yards, and went down.
The feelings that were going through my body, at that time, were more than exhilarating. I’m still not sure what feelings they were, but I know I had my heart racing a mile-a-minute and my knees were trembling. My dreams of harvesting a lion had come true! A memory I will never forget! It was an animal on the top of my bucket list!
WON: What do these awards mean to you?
Nicole: Most people don’t know the trials, tribulations, LONG hours, no sleep and freezing your butt off in the tree stand that we go through each and every year to make the new seasons of “Driven with Pat & Nicole.” We strive to keep the show fresh and on top. Some people think the hunts are all lined up for us, we just jump in a tree stand, the animal walks in, we shoot it and then move on to the next hunt. No one REALLY knows what goes on behind the scenes of hunting a wild animal.
These Golden Moose Awards just prove that hard work and dedication really does pay off. We have such a small, core group of people on our team, and we couldn’t do what we do without each and every one of them! We are all very blessed!
