1. An expedition to hunt turkey across multiple states.
2. A journey of epic proportions.
I’m about to embark on a trip like none I’ve ever taken. A “spurfari,” if you will. I’m excited to share my experiences along the way.
First stop — Sarco Creek Ranch in Goliad, Texas with the Benelli USA crew and other outdoor writers. We will be hunting Rio Grande and Eastern turkey with Franchi Affinity Compact 20-gauge, semi-auto shotguns. I’m excited to try out this shotgun and see how the shortened length of pull fits a woman.
We’re also going to be hog hunting with Uberti High-Wall .45-70s. My hog hunting experience consists of almost being eaten alive when I was 10 years old while on a ranch hunt in Michigan with my dad, so this should be interesting. Pro tip: Don’t sit your child under a pine tree while you go off looking for hogs. They will likely be under said pine tree.
Second stop — I’ll be flying from Texas to Phoenix, Arizona for a two-day women’s defensive handgun course. Hosted by Armed In Heels (AIH) and taught by Force Options, this course is sure to sharpen my shooting skills. I can’t wait to put some lead down range with my girl Jacquelyn from AIH. She did mention something about scorpions the other day though …
I’m also very excited to announce that Armed in Heels will be sponsoring my “ShootingStarr” column here at The WON. AIH is a women’s self-defense online store run by Jacquelyn Kelly and her husband. You might remember Jacquelyn from the feature story I wrote about her, or maybe from the Women’s Outdoor and Shooting Industry Dinner that we planned together during SHOT Show this year.
Jacquelyn is dedicated to providing women opportunities to be trendy, empowered, and feminine while still being able to defend themselves, “We started Armed in Heels in response to a void that we saw in the industry when I first became interested in self-defense. We wanted to create a safe place for females to become empowered by firearms. Armed in Heels is an answer to what I needed when entering the firearms community — and we hope it can be supportive and motivating for other females who choose to do the same.” Check out all of their products at armedinheels.com
Third stop — Barring any scorpion bites, I will be heading from Arizona to an undisclosed location in Missouri to continue the spurfari with Team WON’s Barbara Baird, Marti Davis and Nikki Turpeaux. This will be Nikki’s first time hunting and I’m super excited to be there for her initiation into the hunting world. Hopefully we can put her on a big ‘ol Missouri Eastern.
I’m also looking forward to putting in some hours at the range with Barb and Nikki. Recently named an ambassador for 5.11′s tactical training alliance program, Nikki is sure to provide an abundance of self-defense instruction. She knows her stuff!
We’ve also entered into a friendly competition with the ladies of HERCAMOSHOP.com to see who can bag the biggest bird. Shelly Ray, Becky Lou Lacock and Mia Anstine will be hunting in Nebraska at the same time we are in Missouri. Mia is actually Team WON, but we sent her in as a double agent. Shhh. Don’t tell.
Fourth stop — If I haven’t passed out from exhaustion, I’ll leave Missouri and head straight for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I’m sure I’ll be excited to get back on my home turf. I’m looking forward to hunting Eastern’s with my dad again this season. A tradition that we’ve had since I was old enough to hunt, spring turkey season in the Yoop is always the highlight of my year. We will be runnin’ and gunnin’ in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
Fifth stop — After dad and I try our luck in Michigan, I will go full-circle and end my trip in the same place I started. I’ll fly back to Texas for the NRA Annual Meeting.
I’m exhausted just thinking about it everything involved with this trip, but I’m really looking forward to the adventure I’m about to have. AND, I’ll have a lot of frequent flyer miles when it’s over!
I hope you will come along with me on my journey as I post here at ShootingStarr and on Team WON’s social media.
ShootingStarr is sponsored by Armed in Heels.
