Wendy Megyese: ‘I Was My Mom’s First Protector’

Wendy-MegyeseMother’s Day is  bittersweet for me.

My mom passed away 4 years ago. I miss her. Truth is, I still ” talk” to her.

Not in a weird way, but I hold these silent conversations and tell her the things I would if she was still here.

At the same time, Mother’s Day reminds me of how much I enjoy being a mother, and now, a grandma. Watching how well my daughter cares for her child lets me know I must have done a good job as a mom. I learned from the best, for sure.

I was my mom’s first protector. She was 5 feet tall. Gentle. Sweet. Nurturing. Caring. Giving. Empathetic. And easily taken advantage of.

As soon as I was old enough, I stood between her and anyone who dared try to hurt her. One time, I grabbed a 6’4″, big, thick-necked security guard by the tie and brought him down to my level (a whole 14 inches!). He made my mom cry, and in my world, that was unpardonable. I know he probably thought I was insane because I threatened him in 2 languages.

To say I was enraged would be putting it mildly. He could have easily picked me up and set me aside, but I think he was in a state of shock.  I didn’t hurt him physically, but I did cause him to lose his job.

That happened over 3 decades ago. I have since figured out that my passion for protecting people comes from my childhood experiences of protecting the person who had the most influence in my life – my mom.

How about you? Who needs your protection?

If you’re a mother, think about how important it is for you to protect yourself. There are others who are counting on you. To all the wonderful, beautiful mothers out there — I wish you a Happy Early Mother’s Day.

To my mom, Ana Carmen Rivera. R.I.P. I miss you.

Stay Safe!
