Traci Schauf on location: Guns ’n’ Girls, Camo ’n’ Pearls

How much fun can a person have in one night and not be arrested!?! I think I came close recently (to the fun, not the getting arrested part).

I attended the Camo and Pearls event in Norman, Okla., a women’s-only fundraiser for the National Wild Turkey Federation. It doesn’t get much better than women all dressed up in pretty dresses, cute camo outfits and awesome shoes, talking about … well, what women talk about of course …

SHOES
Are they waterproof? Are they snakeproof? Are they light enough for backpacking? And you thought we only cared about heels.

CLOTHES

There was everything from summery flowery dresses, to business dress, to some of the most interesting camo outfits I have ever seen.  Three teenage sweethearts, who also served as fashion models during dinner and “Vanna Girls” during the auction, wore far and away the best outfits there. They all three were wearing a man’s camo shirt as a dress: one with the sleeves tied in a bow in the back, one tied over the shoulder and one as dress with a belt.

It was so much fun to have the opportunity to talk girl stuff. To a woman, we agreed that as much as it’s fun to get dressed up from time to time, we all prefer the comfort of our hunting and outdoor clothes.  I was excited to see that one of the participating vendors sells women’s camo in XS!!  Hurray!  No more shopping in the kids’ department!

MEN
Well of course we talked about men. Men we’ve met, men we wish we’d never met, men we’d like to meet, and the men in our lives who support us and helped make all this possible.  Even though this was a women’s-only event, it would not have been possible without the help of all the guys to run the games (which only the girls were allowed to play), help with the silent and live auctions, and trick me into buying raffle tickets. And raffle cards.  And more raffle tickets.

SHOPPING
How can you go wrong when you’re spending money for a good cause? (I know; justify, justify, justify.) The items that were donated for auctions and the prize drawings were amazing. I bid on WAAAY more than I should have, and don’t kid yourself – women are competitive when it comes to auctions! Coach bags, jewelry, hotel stays, guns, more guns, hunting trips; it was heaven for hunters of the female persuasion.

FOOD

I can’t skip the food.  Or the adorable table decoration made from antlers, turkey feathers and pearls.

FUN PEOPLE

Oklahoma Lt. Governor Jari Askins attended, and proudly announced she had recently shot her first turkey, a 19 pounder!

The gals of Camo and Pearls can pat themselves on the back for a job well done. Anytime you can combine turkey hunting with shopping, it’s genius.  Thanks for a great night, ladies!!!

That sounds like a super time, Traci! I think it should be a traveling venture and have Camo & Pearls events throughout the country. (Unless they already are doing that.) Sounds awesome!!! Thanks for sharing the evening with us.

So sorry to have to miss C&P this year but it sounds like it was a wonderful event. Becky Evans certainly puts a lot of time and work to make this a fun women-only occasion.
