Babbs in the Woods: Smoke … no mirrors

Volley’d and thunder’d … and the words to Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light Brigade” flashed through my mind as I stood waiting to light a cannon at the North-South Skirmish Association’s (N-SSA’s) national event near Winchester, Va., recently.

The N-SSA embodies what we hope to achieve with this newly designed site, this method of communicating our passions about the outdoors to you, our readers. Many of you have been with us since the beginning, Nov. 4, 2008 (Election Day), and we thank you for your loyalty.

What do we hope to achieve? Just like at the N-SSA, we hope that women will find the freedom and opportunity to step up to the firing line and serve on a cannon brigade or shoot a mortar or musket … or climb in a kayak, pull back a bow, hike to the top of a peak somewhere … just get outdoors. We want women to have the gear necessary to do the job to the best of their abilities – whether it’s a pistol or a better backpack or a boot designed for a woman’s foot. We hope to inspire the marketplace to take note and continue to support women’s efforts to bring their moms, daughters, sons, girlfriends, aunts and others to the outdoors.

We offer you updates from our 13 WON Guns, women who blog about the outdoor experience. We bring back the Gear Court and Shoot to Thrill departments, far too popular to leave behind, and we add a few new items, such as feeds to She-conomy, a site that educates the industry as to the power of women in the marketplace and She’s So Fly, a website run by Sherri Russell that will enhance our Special Events listings.

There will be more to follow – a You Tube page, featured photos from our readers, and more marketplace surveys to find out what you want for your outdoor experience.

And as always, this site would not be possible without our advertisers, who also believe in the mission of promoting the outdoors for women, too. Thanks to Smith & Wesson, Prois Hunting and Field Apparel, MG ArmsHerCamoShop.com, Otis Technology, Doeville and Girls with Guns Clothing.

Let us know what you’d like to see here, too. We’ll be reading and responding to your comments.
