Key West Ladies Dolphin Championship June 29

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Female anglers can vie for $10,000 in cash and prizes during the 2013 Mercury Marine Ladies Dolphin Championship. Scheduled Saturday, June 29, the event is hosted by Murray Marine and offers prizes for the winning boat team and top five individual anglers.

The angler who catches the heaviest dolphin during the daylong tournament earns a $3,000 cash prize. The second-place angler is to receive $1,500 cash, while $500 awaits the third-place finisher.

A boat prize of $2,500 is slated for the team weighing in the heaviest aggregate weight of two dolphin.

Final registration for captains, mates and anglers is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Saltwater Angler, 243 Front St. on the waterfront at the Westin Key West Resort & Marina.

The June 29 angling action is to begin at 7:30 a.m. and end with a weigh-in set for 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Murray Marine, 5710 U.S. Highway 1 at mile marker 5.

In case of a tie, the first fish weighed in will be declared the winner. All weighed fish must exceed 10 pounds and anglers are encouraged to release all fish except their heaviest.

An awards presentation and fish fry are to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, located at 4 Charles St.

The tournament entry fee is $400 per boat. Proceeds are to benefit the Jose Wejebe “Spanish Fly” Memorial Foundation, which supports causes involving marine conservation, education and individuals with special needs.
