Do Cheap Pepper Sprays Work?

Pepper spray is a very effective self defense product. That is the reason virtually every law enforcement officer considers it an invaluable tool they always carry with them. Many workers that frequent people’s homes, such as USPS mail carriers, UPS and Fed Ex drivers and utility meter readers also carry some form of defense spray to guard against dog attacks.

The use of peppers for self defense goes back thousands of years. Allegedly, the Chinese would hurl bags filled with hot peppers at their enemies. Of course, the process has been refined since then and the effects are more devastating. Basically, pepper spray uses a concentration of oleoresin capsicum, also known as OC, which is a derivative of cayenne peppers. It is an inflammatory agent that swells the mucous membranes. This causes the eyes to involuntarily swell shut. The throat also constricts, eliminating all but the ability to draw in life sustaining breath. If you have ever eaten a pepper that made your nose run and your eyes tear, you have sampled the effects of being pepper sprayed. Multiply that discomfort by at least 100 and you have a better understanding of how it actually works.

The most common form of defense sprays used by civilians comes with a keychain attachment. This makes it available when it is most likely to be needed. There are other models that are disguised as lipstick or a small baton. The effectiveness of O.C. spray as well as the portable size are two of the reasons that pepper spray remains the most popular self defense product.

A third reason is the affordability. Most defense sprays cost under $50.00 with the majority of keychain models costing about $10.00. There are some available for as little as $5.00. But does cheap pepper spray really work?

Certainly, when you are buying a product, price should be a consideration. But when you think about the fact that you might have to rely on this product to save your life, price should not be the most important factor.

  • Percentage of OC: 10% is an ideal percentage which allows for both quick penetration of the spray as well as long lasting effects.
  • Range of spray: look for one that will spray at least 6 – 8 feet.
  • Identifying dye: this UV dye lasts for several days and makes identification of the attacker possible, even after the other effects of the spray have dispersed.
  • Grade: Not all defense sprays are made with the same type of grain. Make sure to look for one that is labeled law enforcement grade.
  • Freshness: Pepper spray does expire. Eventually the aerosol propellent breaks down, rendering it ineffective. Most can last up to 4 years, but it is best to replace it at the two year mark. Vendors might mark down their pepper spray because it has been sitting on their shelf for years. Ask how long it has been there. Buy only from a reliable and knowledgeable retailer. Many actually may not know that what they are offering for sale might be expired.
  • Suitable for your lifestyle: select one that you are comfortable with. Although the key chain model is the most popular, there are many other styles, including pepper sprays with blinged out rhinestone cases, a favorite with fashionistas, and pepper sprays disguised as pens.
