Have you ever imagined a gun safe for women? Well, that’s what this is all about, and to bring a little sense of history let me confess to you how all this started.
I was taking a walk around the different vendors of the last gun show I attended – to promote the gun safes that we market – when something called my attention. It’s not that I didn’t know they existed, but this was the first time that I had seen a pink revolver in person. I didn’t lift it off the table for fear of looking “too womanly,” but I had the temptation. Later on, sitting at our display in a not-so-busy gun show, my marketing mind started applying the same “PINK” principle to the product that I work with, and I started visualizing different gun safe models for woman. Truth be told, the first thought that crossed my mind was a pink gun safe with “Hello Kitty” on it, but then I corrected the course and started imagining more feasible models, obviously pink is not the only color that is attractive to women shooters.
As someone who markets gun safes online, one of the things that struck me the most when I started looking at possible partnerships was the size and vigor of the women’s outdoor-hunting-firearms online community, and some time before the aforementioned gun show, I became a member of the Woman’s Outdoor Media Association (The WOMA) as means to getting a grip on this thriving movement (Yes, they accept men among them). And it was the folks at The WOMA who introduced me to Barbara Baird, publisher of this amazing website, the Woman’s Outdoor News (WON), who was enthusiastic about my initial idea of writing about gun safes for women.
Since then, Barb and I have been going back and forth and we concluded that the best was to do a survey. So here we are now making the survey a reality. It’s too early to tell, but ultimately, if the idea has a positive reception, we could end up commissioning a special “gun safe series for women.” It is a feasible scenario. We have already checked with several manufacturers who would be willing to go for it if the quantities justify it. I believe it would be amazing PR for the manufacturer that tackles the women’s firearm market first. But it’s too early in the game and the survey would be an initial indicator; we would of course follow it with a bulletin informing of progress (or not) in the matter.
