Five-month pregnant Chiara Cainero takes 2 gold medals at European Skeet Championship

Chiara Cainero’s feat will go down in the history of the sport. Winning the European title in the fifth month of pregnancy is something that has never been done before. In some competitions it would even be unthinkable to compete. But it was already quite an achievement for Chiara to be here in Suhl today. However she excelled herself, she battled through in a difficult competition, despite the many errors, she didn’t lose heart and, resting on her stool between one round and the next she made her way to the final with a score of 70/75. Level with five other shooters. For example Katiuscia Spada, herself a mother (of 10-month-old Ginevra), who also shot 70. And the Italian team of mothers (the third member is Diana Bacosi, mother of Mattia, aged 4) took the team gold medal.

SEMI-FINAL — The semi-final proved to be quite a challenge. Sixteen targets were launched. The first four of these from station 3. Chiara Cainero shot first and scored 4/4, as did Spada and Turkish shooter Ozyaman. Chiara missed her first target from station 4, but didn’t miss any from station 5. She reached the final round, which she shot once again from station 4, scoring 11/12. Spada wasn’t going to make the final with her score of 9/12, while German competitor Wenzel was neck-and-neck with Chiara. Ozyaman actually shot a maximum (12/12). The final station was to be the decider. Chiara was excellent, she centred all four and returned to her stool, which had been kindly provided, with a score of 15/16. Now the pressure was mounting on Wenzel, who hit the first two targets, but missed the very last target which was launched from the left trap.
