On the Range with Springfield Armory Model 2020 Rimfire

In July, Springfield Armory announced the release of the Model 2020 Rimfire family. These bolt-action rifles are available in two variations: a wood-stocked Classic Model and a synthetic-stocked Target Model. The Classic Model immediately caught my eye as a perfect rifle for a day in the woods hunting squirrels.

Model 2020 Rimfire

First, before I even get into the unboxing, here is a list of some of the features of the rifle:

  • 20-inch long, free-floating premium barrel
  • 1:16 rate of twist
  • Model 700-pattern trigger set at 4.5 lbs.
  • 13.45-inch length of pull
  • Hard chrome bolt with a threaded bolt handle
  • Rubber recoil pad
  • Dual sling swivels
  • Removable “interrupted” Picatinny rail scope mount
  • 10-round rotary magazine

As soon as I brought home my Model 2020 Rimfire, I went to work setting it up. The bolt’s features are worth mentioning, especially since it’s made of hard chrome (for smooth cycling and corrosion resistance), and comes designed with dual cocking cams (for fast follow-up shots), a 60-degree bolt throw (which leaves plenty of clearance for a scope)and a threaded handle (this allows for aftermarket add-ons).

Adding a Scope

For a scope, I reached out to my friends at Crimson Trace, who suggested the Brushline 3-9x40mm scope with the BDC Rimfire reticle optimized for the small-game hunter. (MSRP: $194.99)

HEC scope mount rings

I mounted the scope on the Picatinny rails using Springfield’s HEX rimfire rings. These are available in 1-inch or 30mm with a low, medium or high height option. (MSRP of $49.99)

Attaching HEX rings

With a few adjustments for eye relief, I was ready to head to the range to sight in the Model 2020 Rimfire.

The Range

On the range I set up Caldwell’s Ultimate Target Stand with Orange Peel Sight-In targets. These targets allow for easy feedback through the scope at 50 yards. Center hits on the target flake-off to white, other shots are yellow.

I began by boresighting the rifle; this saves a little time and gets the crosshairs in the ballpark.

Bore sighting

The sighting in process didn’t take long. In no time, I had white explosions on the target (which means a center hit) with Remington’s 22 Golden Bullet

Springfield Armory’s Model 2020 Rimfire is a pleasant rifle to shoot. The bolt ran smoothly, allowing me to keep my head on the gun for fast follow-up shots.

I plan to return to the range to get more time on the rifle and shoot at different distances before I head out on a squirrel hunt. Plus, plinking with a .22 is just so much fun!

The price point of Springfield’s Model 2020 Rimfire family varies depending on the chosen model and the grade of wood. Plus, the rifles have an accuracy guarantee.

“Springfield Armory stands behind all Model 2020 Rimfire rifles with a rock-solid 1″ accuracy guarantee — for a three-shot group at 50 yards with quality match-grade factory ammunition, in the hands of a skilled shooter.”

MSRP: $434 to $1,099
