On the Range with Springfield Armory’s Kuna Pistol

Getting a new gun is always exciting, but heading to the range with that gun and a few boxes of ammunition is even more exciting. Add the fact that it’s a firearm that most people haven’t even seen yet, like Springfield’s Kuna pistol, makes it even more thrilling.

On April 15, 2025, the day the Kuna was released, The WON shared a first look at this 9mm pistol. I finally have time to put it to the test on the range, but before I even leave the house, I want to take the time to ensure I understand how to run this gun, adjust the sights and operate it properly. To do so, I went to the Kuna manual, which is available online at Springfield Armory’s website or in the Springfield Armory app.

I began reading about how to disassemble the Kuna to ensure I oiled it properly. The directions in the manual appeared easy to follow and included helpful photos. It also included diagrams showing exactly where to add oil for maintenance. The pistol arrived very dry, so I made sure to lubricate it as directed.

After reading through the manual and ensuring I understood how the Kuna functions, I spent some time manipulating it and conducting a little dry fire practice. With the current temps in the 80s, this was best done in the air conditioning.

loading magazine

The Kuna ships with two proprietary, 30-round translucent magazines featuring metal feed lips. These are prepped like an AR magazine where you just push the rounds down – no sliding needed. Super easy! I really liked the translucent feature. There was no guessing as to how many rounds were in the magazine. On a side note, extra Kuna magazines are available on the Springfield Armory website for only $25.

Kuna Pistol On the Range

Once on the range, I wanted to get a feel for the roller-delayed operating system which is engineered to reduce reciprocating mass. This system uses recoil to cycle the action. A roller temporarily locks the bolt into battery, eliminating the need for a heavy bolt or gas system. This, in turn, reduces recoil and muzzle flip. I also wanted to determine its accuracy and ease of use. I began by shooting at a target with no concern for where the bullet impacted; I just wanted to focus on the recoil. And all I have to say about that is this: “What recoil?”

Next I wanted to find out where my bullets impacted right out of the box using the adjustable flip-up sights. I began with the target set out at 7 yards, seated on a bench aiming at the middle diamond. After numerous shots and a quick glance at the target, I determined that the shots consistently impacted to the left, so I decided to make a windage adjustment on the rear sight. Turning the knob “clockwise” moves the bullet impact to the right. Counterclockwise moves the impact to the left. Each click moves the bullet impact ½-inch at 25 yards. I turned the knob clockwise one click then aimed at the bottom left diamond (still seated). Spot on! If the bullets had consistently impacted high or low, I would have used the front sight to adjust the elevation of the shots. Clockwise rotation lowers the bullet’s impact, and a counterclockwise rotation raises it. Each click moves the bullet impact 1/4″ at 25 yards.

Then, as you can see from the target photo, I moved the target out to 12 yards, shooting from both seated and standing positions. Finally, I put about 18 rounds in the Kuna and finished the day both seating and standing with the target at 16 yards. For my first time on the range with the Kuna, I used New Republic, Remington and bulk ammunition, along with the hybrid flip-up sights. All in all, I enjoyed shooting the Kuna and am very happy with my shot placement.

If I were to keep the Kuna, I would add a red dot and then put some defensive ammunition to the test. The small size makes it a great truck gun, camper gun, tent gun or one to carry in a backpack. If I had it before I wrote “Tips for Using Your 9mm Carbine for Home Defense,” I definitely would have included it.

While putting all my gear away in the back of my car, a few people came over to chat to find out what I was up to. When they saw the Kuna, the common comment was, “What the heck is that?” followed by, “That is so cool!” I told them I’d make sure to bring it back to the range so they could enjoy shooting the Kuna as much as I did. I better pack some extra ammunition next time!
