DIY Yarn Pom Pom Garland for Valentine’s Day

Last year I made a sweet clay heart garland with my kids. This year a winter storm showed up, dumping snow and chilling us with cold weather. Having a little extra time inside, I took up the challenge of learning to make my own yarn pom poms. Combined with some felt hearts I had ordered online, I spent a naptime creating a yarn pom pom garland for Valentine’s Day.

Making the Garland

I gathered the following materials:

  • scissors
  • multicolor yarn
  • felt hearts
  • cardboard
  • Sharpie marker (pen or pencil would also work)
  • two circular objects, to trace concentric circles
  • embroidery floss
  • needle with large eye

To make the yarn pom poms, I followed a YouTube tutorial from Sheep & Stitch. Here are the basic steps I followed to create pom poms for my garland:

I laid out my garland, alternating yarn pom poms and felt hearts, until I was happy with the overall appearance and length of the decor. I had enough materials to create two shorter garlands.

Next, I used a needle with a large eye and pink embroidery floss to connect the pom poms and hearts.

Last, I tied off the ends of the floss and hung the garlands on my kitchen shelves. This sweet and simple craft was a lot of fun to make!
