The bird flushes fast. Wings explode from brush. Your heart jumps into your throat.
And then nothing.
You never lift the gun.
For one woman at Her Upland’s quail hunting skills camp, that was day one. She carried her shotgun across rugged ground, felt the surge of adrenaline, watched coveys rise, and chose not to pull the trigger.
Day two, she harvested her first bird.
That arc is what this camp is about.
Her Upland’s skills camp brings women together for a week focused on preparation, not performance. The mission is simple: empower women to hunt public land confidently and independently. Shotgun instruction is led by experienced female instructors. Off the range, participants learn navigation tools, first aid, dog safety, gear selection, land ethics, and how to read habitat. The goal is not to create experts overnight. It is to build competence one layer at a time.
Instructor Brandy Elrod remembers attending her first camp without knowing anyone. What struck her was how quickly women move from hesitation to ownership. Even those who do not harvest a bird leave changed.
The environment is intentional. All women teaching. All women mentoring. Questions are welcome. Pace is personal. One participant admitted she arrived intimidated by the terrain and worried about keeping up. By the end of the week, she realized she could move as fast or as slow as she needed. The space allowed her to learn without feeling lesser.
Small wins are celebrated. A clean gun mount. A steady swing. A safe decision not to shoot. Confidence builds in those moments.
Conservation is woven into every lesson. Non-toxic ammunition is required. Harvest is limited from each covey. The land is respected and left better than it was found. Ethics are not an afterthought. They are foundational.
Organizations like Ducks Unlimited help amplify programs like this, bringing visibility to women-led efforts that open doors to public lands and lifelong stewardship.
In the end, the most important shot at camp is not the one that connects. It is the one a woman decides she is finally ready to take.
