Echelon Alpha: Saving Money One Gun at a Time

In December 2024, Springfield Armory released the Echelon 4.0C (MSRP $710), the compact size in the Echelon family of pistols, which were first introduced in the late summer of 2023. Today, Springfield Armory announced the release of a new Echelon variant, the Echelon Alpha 4.0C, with a very solid price point of $599 (MSRP).

Echelon Family

If you read my previous article, I was highly impressed with the Echelon because it felt so natural in my hands. Then, after spending time with it on the range, I decided to purchase it. I like the flat-faced trigger with its clean break and all the textured index points along the slide. Also, since it has an ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release, I can share it with those lefties on the range. Now, with the new Alpha variant, it’s even more affordable for those people who are pinching pennies, but who still want a quality handgun – and that notion makes sense, since it’s a tool you may need to defend your life or that of someone you love.

I bet you are wondering what the changes are that brought about this entry-level handgun price. But first, it’s important to know that the Echelon Alpha has the same Central Operating Group (COG) as the rest of the Echelon family. This allows you to switch out the serialized chassis with other Echelon grip models and slides. Which means, you are getting into the COG system at a lower price point. Watch an in-depth video of how the COG works on the Springfield Armory website. It’s very impressive.

The Changes

1. White box packaging. (You do not receive a handgun case.)

2. One stainless-steel magazine 15+1: In the original series, you receive two that are blacked out. For those who want extra magazines, the Springfield Armory online shop offers them in various round counts.

3. Single, medium backstrap: You can purchase a backstrap kit with all three sizes if you decide you need a different size. I use the medium grip anyway with my original Echelon.

4. Recontoured, simplified and streamlined slide: Still deep, aggressive serrations that offer a secure grip in any situation. Some friends who have worked with the Echelon find the serrations too aggressive. I, however, prefer them, especially on hot days when my hands are sweaty or cold days when I’m wearing gloves.

5. White, U-Dot iron sight: Although the original series is Tritium, the white dot still has the Tactical Rack U-Notch rear sight.

6. Polymer cover plate: For those who don’t plan on installing an optic, the cover plate covers the space, creating a finished looking profile.

What’s the Same

Sure, there are a few changes; however, the aspects of the Echelon Alpha that stayed the same as the original Echelon are what really matter. Here are some of the other features that make the Echelon series superior to other handguns:

  • Oversized trigger guard
  • Adaptive grip texture
  • Seamless optics integration (check out the video)
  • Self-locking front pins
  • COG system (as mentioned above)

In a world where the price of everything keeps going up, Springfield Armory cares enough about consumers to find a way to lower the cost of a handgun so you can join the Echelon family.
