Firearm Safety Starts With You

Responsible firearm ownership begins long before stepping onto the range. It starts with awareness, education and a commitment to safe handling every time a firearm is touched. During Safety Month, it is important to highlight not only the role technology plays in firearm safety but also the responsibility that ultimately lies with the shooter.

The GLOCK Gen6 platform continues that commitment with the Safe Action® System, a design that has become one of the most recognized safety systems in modern firearms. Built around simplicity, reliability and consistency, the Safe Action® System was developed to help support safe firearm handling without adding unnecessary complexity to the platform.

Understanding GLOCK’s Safe Action® System

The GLOCK Safe Action® System consists of three independent mechanical safeties built directly into the firearm. These safeties disengage sequentially as the trigger is intentionally pressed and automatically reengage when the trigger is released.

Safe Action System
  • The first is the trigger safety, which helps prevent unintended trigger movement unless it is deliberately engaged.
  • The second is the firing pin safety, which prevents the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is intentionally pressed fully to the rear.
  • The third is the drop safety, which helps prevent the firearm from discharging if it is dropped or struck.

Together, these systems work continuously in the background while allowing the pistol to maintain a consistent trigger pull from the first round to the last. The design eliminates the need for external manual safeties while still incorporating multiple layers of internal safety mechanisms. The goal is not to replace responsible firearm handling, but to support it.

Follow the Four

Safety Features Do Not Replace Safe Habits

No firearm safety system can replace proper training and disciplined handling. The most important safety on any firearm remains the person using it. That is why the core rules of firearm safety continue to matter regardless of the platform or experience level.

Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.

Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to fire.

Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Although these rules are simple, they are nonnegotiable. Consistently following them helps prevent negligent discharges and reinforces responsible firearm ownership.

Why Consistency Matters

One of the many advantages of the Safe Action® System is consistency. Every trigger press feels the same, allowing shooters to build familiarity and confidence through repetition and training. For everyday firearm owners, law enforcement officers and defensive shooters, consistency becomes especially important under stress, when individuals often rely on training and muscle memory rather than conscious thought. A consistent trigger system allows shooters to focus on safe firearm handling, target identification and trigger control without the added complexity of transitioning between different trigger actions or manual safety configurations.

Skip’s Takeaways

Firearm safety is not a trend or seasonal conversation. It is an everyday responsibility shared by manufacturers, instructors, range officers, parents and individual gun owners. Technology can support safe handling. Training can reinforce it. Education can strengthen it. But responsibility ultimately rests with the shooter.

The GLOCK Gen6 platform and the Safe Action® System reflect a continued focus on reliability, simplicity and safety-minded design. Combined with proper training and adherence to the fundamental rules of firearm safety, these systems support responsible firearm ownership both on and off the range. This Safety Month, take the opportunity to review the fundamentals, educate new shooters and recommit to safe firearm handling practices every day. Join me and take the pledge at glocksafety.com.
