Kathryn Maroun’s one-woman protest at Anglers’ Club makes pages of ‘Fly Fisherman’ magazine

An item about WON blogger Kathryn Maroun appears on page 21 in the Newscasts section of the current issue (Apr-May 2013) of “Fly Fisherman” magazine.

In New York City last autumn for a charity fundraising dinner, Kathryn also made time to stage a one-woman protest outside the Anglers’ Club of New York in Manhattan’s financial district. Founded in 1906, the Club still bars women from membership.

“It’s past time for the Anglers’ Club to drop its archaic, men-only membership policy,” she said.

Also containing articles on Skwala stoneflies, catching lake trout on flies, and saltwater flats fishing in Belize, the April-May issue of “Fly Fisherman” is on newsstands now.

Editor’s note: To which we say, “Go, Sis, go!” And, thanks to Bill Bowers, friend of The WON, for not only writing the news article at the magazine, but also alerting us to its publication.

Keep it strong Kathryn! I have had so many different female anglers here at Olive the Lake Lodge. They leave the men behind and enjoy what is called COMRADERY.

Better than protesting: taking action. Start your own Angling Club. Let whoever you want in. Raise more money. Have a better library. Do more for conservation. Have better dinners.

Winning is not getting in. Winning is not caring about getting in…

You go Kat! Bare those claws, snarl your teeth … or better yet; out cast, out catch, out perform, out class the stodgey old duffer mentality. Now, THERE – you ‘gott’em all in a ‘gelding death-grip’ !!!!

I really have to wonder WHY anyone would deny a woman entrance – period. Are they that insecure? If so, then more than their ‘rods’ are endangered.

Get over it guys. Women are fab fishers. Wonderful stream partners. Attentive to details most guys miss; comes in handy at the most opportune moment(s). Oh, and BTW guys, don’t forget it was a WOMAN who took the time and expended the creative energy to study, catalog and write the FIRST printed book on the subject of fly-fishing. Remember the, “Treatyse of Fysshynge with an Angle”, by Dame Juliana Berners? If not be enlightened .. http://www.flyfishinghistory.com/treatyse.htm.

In all honesty .. my personal take on all the ‘mens clubs’ that have denied women entrance/access, is this:

They’re probably places I (definitely a man!) would not even want to hang out in. Some of the people there, I would find interesting and enjoy conversation and time-on-water. But the overall attitude of superiority such dens ooze, just does not settle well and in general riles both my temper and my waters too much.

My position: Gain entrance, then refuse to join. They really do not deserve your membership.

    Cast On!

This is like asking “why don’t fraternities admit women?” It’s a pretty simple answer: it’s a bunch of guys who want to be left alone among themselves.

Also, many of these “no women members” rules that clubs have came about with the support of women. The reasoning was that if the husband is out of the house at least he’s not cavorting with the fairer sex.
