Gal Gab: Amanda Lynn Mayhew Is ‘That Hunting Girl’

Amanda Lynn Mayhew grew up well acquainted with the outdoors of northern Ontario. For more than a decade, she has been inspiring people to get outdoors and hunt and/or fish through her television series, “That Hunting Girl,” which is in its 11th year and can be seen on the Sportsman Channel (Canada), MOTV, Prime, Apple TV, SCI Tv and Victory+ TV.

Amanda Lynn is the founder of Just Hunt Inc., an organization established to educate and inspire new hunters through many outreach programs, including Take Me Hunting seminars. She created the Take Me Hunting program, which connects mentors and new hunters afield. If that’s not enough, Amanda finds time to produce the Just Hunt Gala and Awards annual event in Ontario, to raise money for the Take Me Hunting program.

We caught up with Amanda before hunting seasons started this year, and she quickly responded to our six questions for this installment of Gal Gab.

Describe a typical day in your work life.

No two days are ever the same for me, which is one of the things I love most about this industry. One day I’m producing television episodes, filming in the field, and coordinating shoots, and the next I’m editing content, writing articles, meeting with sponsors, or planning upcoming hunts and events. I also spend a lot of time traveling for speaking engagements, personal appearances, and the highly anticipated Take Me Hunting seminar series. A lot of my work happens outdoors, but there’s also a huge business and creative side behind the scenes that people don’t always see. It’s long days, early mornings and a lot of travel, but I genuinely love every part of it.

#1 piece of advice you would give other females who want to break into the industry?

Be authentic and don’t try to fit into someone else’s version of who you should be. This industry respects people who are genuine, hardworking and consistent. Learn as much as you can, show up prepared and don’t be afraid to take up space. There’s room for women in the outdoors, and your knowledge, passion and perspective matter.

What motivates you?

I’m motivated by the opportunity to inspire people to get outdoors and experience hunting and fishing for themselves. I also love building something meaningful through my work – whether that’s producing content, growing my brand, or creating opportunities for others in the industry. Knowing that my content encourages someone to try something new or spend more time outside keeps me going.

Most unexpected thing you’ve learned, while working in this industry?

Probably how much happens behind the scenes that viewers never see. People see the finished television episode or social media post, but not the planning, travel, weather delays, editing, logistics and long hours that go into making it happen. I’ve also learned how important relationships and reputation are in this industry; your work ethic really speaks for itself.

Let’s have some fun … what weapon would you use to battle a giant?

Without question, my Henry .360 Buckhammer. If I’m battling a giant, I want something reliable, hard-hitting and built for the outdoors – plus, lever actions just have style.
