Making the case for LIFEPROOF

What is it about cell phone cases? We seem to search for just the right one, that functions, yet shouts to the world something about our lifestyles. And that’s what LIFEPROOF does. It looks no-nonsense, yet sleek and techno trendy.

LIFEPROOF sent me a bright blue iPhone 4S case to try. How is LIFEPROOF different from other cell phone cases? It claims it is waterproof up to 6.6 feet (2 meters). In fact, it suggests that you “just relax in the bath” with your phone. So, that’s the first challenge I took with this case. Not the bath part, but submerging it. I figured a full kitchen sink of two feet of water ought to suffice. I put a paper towel inside the case and locked it shut. Then, I submerged it and moved it around with gusto. When I took it out and dried it off and took it apart, I found a bone-dry paper towel inside. Granted, I did not submerge it to the full 6.6 feet, but I think a quick splash in a toilet or drop into a pool or shoreline at the beach will not affect this case.

Not only does the case protect the phone from water, think about what it will do when faced with snow, dirt, sand and snirt (yes, snirt – that’s a Dakotan term for snow and dirt mixed together).

The phone case also claims to be shockproof, designed to military specifications and test to, again, 6.6 feet. I did not drop my phone on the garage floor or find a 6.6-foot tall dude to drop the phone. I’m going to take their word on it. You can read more about specifications and testing of the phone, too.

I like that the plastic that covers the glass of my iPhone inside the case is nice and crystal clear. It’s also easy to slide and type on the plastic. The smooth plastic on the rest of the case allows me to pop this phone case into my pocket and slide it out quickly.

The only drawback to the phone is that it does not accept my car phone charger. Supposedly, LIFEPROOF is working on that issue, and soon will offer an adapter for phone jacks. I had no problems using my standard iPhone recharger end.

You may order accessories – such as a bike & bar mount, arm band, belt clip and float & lanyard combination – to support any outdoor activities you engage in.

I will continue to use this case. It supports my active lifestyle in the outdoors. And, it comes in several colors and retails for $79.99. LIFEPROOF also makes cases for iPads and iTouches. Visit LIFEPROOF.
